A Sandusky man was arrested early Friday morning for a kicking a police officer.

Terry Patrick, 37, of the 1300 block of Mills St., was charged with assault on a police officer, a fifth-degree felony, as well as resisting arrest and disorderly conduct intoxicated.

Patrick allegedly grabbed a large knife Friday around 3:30 a.m., prompting his girlfriend to call police, as she believed he was threatening to injure himself, Sandusky police Officer Robert Gardin said.

When officials arrived at Patrick's Mills Street home, they found him intoxicated and allegedly causing a disturbance. Officers also learned he walked out of Firelands Regional Medical Center that day mid-treatment, police said.

As Gardin was looking through Patrick's wallet, trying to find an identification card, Patrick kicked him, Gardin said.

Patrick continued the ruckus while in the back of a police cruiser, repeatedly smacking his head against a divider, Gardin said.

Eventually, officers had to use pepper spray to subdue him.

Patrick was arrested and taken to the Erie County jail. He remains there on an approximate $10,000 bond.
