Barge party returns

After a one-year hiatus, the Sandusky Bay Barge Party is back.

Local boating enthusiasts have resurrected the rambunctious yet popular bayside beach bash, emanating from the shores of Sandusky's sandbar on Saturday.

Hundreds if not thousands are expected to attend the event.

With some help from Shaun Bickley, the event’s main coordinator, here’s five reasons to attend the gathering:

No charge

Anyone can boat, paddle or — for Olympian-like athletes — swim to the event. Be careful. Fatigue from the sun and partying all day might tire some out that are returning to the mainland once the party officially ends at 5 p.m.

Warm weather

The forecast ranges from high 70s late Saturday morning to low 80s throughout the afternoon. There’s a slight chance of rain, which might prove beneficial for those looking to cool off without getting drenched in Lake Erie.

Hitting the right notes

Starting at 1 p.m., Popular Ohio-based cover band Off The Hook is scheduled to rock the barge stage, playing during separate contests tailored for both men and women.

“My favorite part is getting out and meeting all the like-minded boaters and other partiers,” Bickley said.

Drink but be safe

People can drink when they’re out in the bay but stay alert — Bickley expects a barrage of law enforcement officials to patrol in and around the barge party.

“Please make sure to have a sober skipper,” Bickley said.

Two years ago, undercover and on-duty agents charged Bickley and his family with various offenses while hosting the Barge Party. This, along with resulting legal fallout, forced the family to cancel the Barge Party in 2013.
