Treasurer search begins again

The months-long treasurer search at Sandusky Schools is back to square one.

After narrowing down a list of hopefuls to two finalists, school board members agreed Tuesday to restart the process and seek entirely new candidates.

In the meantime, they'll likely appoint an interim treasurer to fill in for departing treasurer Kevin Roberston, whose final day with the district is July 31.

Paul Pendleton, owner of Finding Leaders search firm, confirmed the decision Tuesday.

Sandusky Schools officials teamed up with the Cleveland-area firm in April to broaden their hunt beyond the local area.

"In a range of about two to four months, they'll probably have someone selected," Pendleton said. "They just haven't found a treasurer yet who is best suited for the district's needs."

Early Tuesday, board members interviewed two finalists for the Sandusky Schools treasurer job:

•Gina Deppert, Ashland Schools treasurer since 2008.

•Michael Verlingo, Shawnee Schools treasurer since 2012.

Ultimately, neither individual was the "right fit," prompting the decision to continue searching, Pendleton said.

Among the abilities board members are seeking in an ideal candidate: strong communication skills, experience as a school treasurer and familiarity with all types of school funding.

Equally important: a desire to move to Sandusky and become an active member of the community.

Sandusky Schools has already spent about $7,500 on its partnership with Finding Leaders so far, Robertson said.

It's undetermined how much the district will spend on extending its search.
