Sandusky Schools will extend the elementary school day by 20 minutes in the 2014-15 school year.
District officials unveiled the retooled schedule Wednesday.
It tacks on extra time to the end of the day at Hancock, Ontario, Osborne and Venice Heights elementary schools.
It adds 15 minutes to the end of the day at Mills Elementary School, where classes will also begin 5 minutes earlier.
School days for high and middle school students will remain the same length as this past school year, but will occur at a different time.
Classes will begin 21 minutes later, but they will also dismiss 21 minutes later, according to the new schedule.
Times at Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies will remain unchanged from this past school year.
The goal is to improve student achievement by increasing student-teacher contact time, according to a Wednesday news release.
"Elementary teachers have been requesting additional time for the last few years to focus on instruction, and now their requests have come to fruition," officials said in the release.
The upcoming school year begins Aug. 18, about a week earlier than this past school year.
Both district officials and teachers union representatives agreed to implement the new schedule, according to the release.
Teacher salaries will not increase because of the extra 20 minutes of class time.
