And then there were two.
The year-old Danbury Township fire department narrowed its search for a full-time fire chief down to two candidates this week, Danbury Township trustee Dianne Rozak said Thursday.
Four candidates were initially interviewed last week.
Danbury Township interim fire Chief Dough Waugh is among the two candidates in the running, Rozak said.
Waugh has held the interim position since the Lakeside and Marblehead fire departments merged last July.
His contract is set to expire July 1, and Danbury Township trustees will meet in special session today to extend Waugh's contract another two weeks.
After those two weeks, trustees will hold an executive session to interview Waugh and the other candidate, whose name is not yet available.
Rozak said the merger between departments has had a few bumps along the way like any major merger, but all in all, it was the right move for the township.
"It's been a learning process new to everyone," Rozak said. "Having our own fire department is going well though. Volunteers have been fabulous."
The Danbury Township fire department has 44 volunteers.
The township previously contracted with the Lakeside and Marblehead departments since 1905 and 1895, respectively.
The move was made to create a unified fire and EMS department to improve efficiency, trustees said around the time of the merger.
In addition, it was made to give the township its first ever fire department, Rozak said.
