Churches host blood drive

A collection of area churches will congregate Saturday around a common goal: saving lives.

Columbus Avenue United Methodist Church will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its facility at 2401 Columbus Ave.

The event includes hourly door prizes and other giveaways, as well as homemade sandwiches and cookies for donors.

"But it's about giving, not getting," said Lynda Atkinson, whose husband, Paul Atkinson, is pastor of the Columbus Avenue church.

Other churches participating in the blood drive include Salem United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church and St. Stephen's United Church of Christ.

The group hosted a similar blood drive twice this past year, and plans to again in January.

"Any time we can partner to help each other, it's a good thing," Lynda said. "And it's something that any one of us could need at any time — blood."

They're aiming for at least 50 donors Saturday, she said.

Walk-ins are welcome, but individuals can register by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or going to redcrossblood.org.
