50 years ago, 1964: A teen-aged boy named James Bertsch out-baked area gals in the cup-cake competition at Margaretta and took first place honors. He was the only boy to come to the contest and said he learned to cook to help his mother at home.
25 years ago, 1989: Cleveland received unwanted national attention after the Cuyahoga River caught fire 20 years ago today in an industrial area near downtown. Experts said the Cuyahoga's pollution problem was not unique. The famous 20-minute fire stared when an oil slick ignited.
10 years ago, 2004: Roger Markley, 80, Sandusky, died in Providence Care Center. He owned and operated Markley's Restaurant in Sandusky from 1954 until he retired in 1998, the day the City of Sandusky proclaimed Roger Markely Day.
