Historic rainfall overwhelms city’s storm sewers

Associated Press • Jun 20, 2014 at 10:20 AM

The torrential rain Monday in Canton washed out sections of roadway, flooded basements and forced raw sewage into some homes.

Canton Engineer Dan Moeglin told The Repository one resident measured 4.2 inches of water in 90 minutes on a rain gauge — twice the intensity of a 100-year rain.

“You don’t design storm sewer systems to handle that level of intensity” Moeglin said. “They did what they were supposed to do”

Residents were cleaning up Tuesday, hauling soaked furniture, children’s toys and trash bags filled with clothing to the curb.
