The West Huron Youth Club with have their 10th annual “Day in the Outdoors” event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joe Steinen Wildlife Center in Huron.

Children and adults get in free all day, thanks to year-round fundraising, raffle ticket sales and grants provided by two conservation groups.

Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day Saturday, and the winner of $500 and other cash prizes announced at 3 p.m.

Linda Steinen, vice president of the West Huron Youth Club, said the club’s attendance varies throughout the year, as some events are more popular than others.

“People come seasonally (to the club) and it depends on the event, but yearly we get about 30 to 40 families,” she said.

Noteworthy acts this year include Judi Bigham, a woman who trains her sheep-herding dogs and sheep to entertain audiences. The popular event last came in 2010.

Additionally, southern Ohio native Sam Hern will demonstrate open kettle cooking, preparing some bean soup. Lastly, Lori Ernsberger will helk children make prairie dolls.

The group will present the annual Recognition Award to two individuals at 1 p.m. In the past, the award was given to one individual.

“They are two volunteers who don’t bring attention to themselves,” Steinen said of the recipients. “They don’t know (about the award), but the families do.”

Free food and beverages will be available all day, in addition to events like hay wagon rides, corn shelling with an educational display, as well as archery, tomahawk and fly-fishing demonstrations.

Steinen hopes Saturday’s event brings more kids outdoors in a society where technology constantly gains more precedence in everyday life.

“Twitter and Facebook are called social networking, but I think that social networking is face-to-face interaction,” she said.

“It’s a great thing to offer community families,” she said. “The kids have a good time. (The event) offers new experiences (for kids).”

West Huron Youth Club “will promote by all proper means and teamwork, the education of the area youth with regard to conservation, sports afield, gardening and the skills and crafts of our forefathers,” according to the mission statement on the club’s website.

Families from Erie, Ottawa, Huron, Lorain, Sandusky and Seneca counties participate in the club. The group meets the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m.
