Suspended employee performed poorly

The Townsend Community School employee suspended this past month for downloading confidential digital documents indeed performed poorly on his most recent evaluation.

Stephen Nellett, an intervention specialist, obtained the private digital information from school computers after officials told him they weren't offering him a new contract for the upcoming school year.

They cited his most recent evaluation, which the Register obtained Tuesday through a public records request.

In the evaluation, Townsend Community School principal Steve Keller said Nellett "needed improvement" in nearly half the performance areas evaluated.

Nellett refused to sign the document, dated May 2. His alleged downloading occurred shortly after.

He has been placed on paid leave, which concludes June 30, the last day of his contract.

Nellett's annual salary is nearly $44,000, according to additional information the Register obtained through the records request.

The documents Nellett downloaded include "answer keys to student examinations, 'study guides' prepared for such examinations, and other school documents," according to an affidavit the Register obtained in a previous public records request.  He also embedded his personal email address into an online storage program, which would allow him to access other confidential school information.

Any documents Nellett seized have since been deleted or destroyed, and they have not been distributed to anyone.

Nellett had been employed with Townsend Community School since it opened in 2011.
