Meat recall could hit home

A Detroit company's batch of contaminated meat may have been distributed to a number of Gordon Food Service Marketplace stores in Ohio and eight other states, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Wolverine Packing Company has voluntarily recalled about 1.8 million pounds of FRESH ground beef products that may be contaminated with E coli. The products were produced from March 31 to April 18. The company has said the products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 2574B.” E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium.  

The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service released a list of stores that received the products, as well as a complete list of the products.

The list indicates the products were distributed to some Gordon Food Service Marketplace stores in Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. 

The release does not indicate if the Gordon Food Service store on Milan Road in Perkins Township was among those that received the products, and the Gordon Food Service website does not appear to detail which stores received the products in question. The company's representatives could not be reached late Thursday.

The tainted meat has sickened at least 11 people in four states, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

According to the agency: "The FSIS was notified of the first illness on May 8 and immediately began working with our partners at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to find the source of these illnesses.  Based on the initial findings in the investigations, FSIS and CDC were able to establish a direct link to ground beef products supplied by Wolverine Packing Company." 

The agency added: "The illnesses associated with this particular recall involve a very rare strain of E. coli O157:H7, so if there are additional illnesses, it may be easier for FSIS to establish a direct link to product from this facility; it also will be possible that any additional illnesses will be linked to product that is already subject to the recall.  If any additional illnesses are linked to different production dates that are not covered in the initial recall, then the recall would be expanded."

"For consumers, we advise all consumers to safely prepare raw ground beef products by cooking them to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.  When dining out, this is equivalent to ordering your burger well done.  At the grocery store, check ground beef product labels that bear the establishment number “EST. 2574B” with a production date code in the format “Packing Nos: MM DD 14” between “03 31 14” and “04 18 14.”
