Margaretta names three finalists

The new superintendent at Margaretta Schools will travel into the district from out of town.

Officials and school board members have trimmed a lengthy list of superintendent hopefuls to three finalists, all from southern Ohio:

•Randy Dunlap, principal of Clinton-Massie middle and high schools, in Clarksville, between Cincinnati and Dayton.

•Daniel Schroer, superintendent of Greene County Career Center, in Xenia, near Dayton.

•Tim Winland, superintendent of Paint Valley Schools, in Bainbridge, south of Columbus and east of Cincinnati.

Board members interviewed eight people earlier this month during closed-door meetings.

After one such meeting Monday, they decided to invite Dunlap, Schroer and Winland for second interviews Saturday, district treasurer Jude Hammond said.

The closed-door interviews start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the district’s board office, 305 S. Washington St., Castalia.

Board members have also scheduled a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. May 6 at the Margaretta High School library, 209 Lowell St., Castalia, according to a news release.

At the closed-door meeting, they’ll likely select the district’s superintendent from one of the three finalists and begin contract discussions, with no public action to follow, Hammond said.

“It’s still up in the air, but I anticipate they’ll narrow it down from three to one” he said.

The timeline positions the board to hire the chosen person at their May 19 meeting. He’ll transition into the new job throughout June and July and officially begin Aug. 1.

A total of 22 individuals applied to replace departing Margaretta Schools superintendent Ed Kurt in March, including six area educators.

Two of those educators lived within the school district: Troy Roth, Margaretta High School principal, and Drew Grahl, Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools athletic and maintenance director.

Former Huron Schools superintendent Fred Fox, who lost his job through a controversial firing in April 2013, also applied.
