50 years ago, 1964: An investigation was ordered in to the possibility that Erie County sheriff's deputies were involved in alleged looting at the site of the Giant Tiger fire. Sheriff Alton Young said he didn't believe the charges, but a thorough investigation was underway.
25 years ago, 1989: With the weather alternately hurting and helping the cleanup of the nation's worst oil spill, Exxon Corp. spurned an offer of federal troops to help in the battle and indicated the public might ultimately foot the bill.
10 years ago, 2004: Maintenance men rescued a tenant at the 200 block of McDonough St., after they found him trapped under an organ. Neighbors reported a strange smell and said they had not seen the man for several weeks. The man had been trapped under the 200 pound organ for 7-10 days.
