Local charity needs your votes

A local charity that helps families facing a terminal illness is in line to win $25,000 — but it needs help.
The resale shop When Pigs Fly, operated for the benefit of The Piggyback Foundation, will benefit if local Internet users help the shop win an online vote.
The Piggyback Foundation helps families in times of need, particularly children when their parents are going through a medical — and often financial — crisis from a terminal illness. The group is there to help children maintain a normal routine, such as paying for participating on a sports team.
“We were started to provide a consistent income for The Piggyback Foundation,” said Lisa Hiler, director of The Piggyback Foundation, referring to the store.
When Pigs Fly is one of 10 finalists for the Staples “Make Your Idea Happen” contest. There were 16,000 entries in the contest.
Voting will help determine who wins the $25,000 grand prize, $15,000 first place prize and $10,000 second place prize.
“We are so excited about the Staples contest. $25,000 is a tremendous amount. It is a quarter of our budget” Hiler said.
In the two years since When Pigs Fly has been in operation at 31 E. Main St. in Norwalk, it has raised $67,000 for The Piggyback Foundation through its sales. Items for sale in the shop have either been donated, by businesses such as from Hermans Furniture or Village Lighting, or purchased at extremely discounted rates, from businesses such as K&K Interiors and Norwalk Furniture.
Now the shop has a chance to win $25,000 — but it needs votes to beat out the other nine finalists.
Voting is open to the public through Wednesday on the Staples Make Your Idea Happen Contest website.
