50 years ago, 1964: Although some 49 airplanes were registered for Erie County, only 37 were being used, the rest were inactive. According to the Federal Aeronautics Authority 13 planes were privately owned, 21 by business firms, two by flying clubs and one by an air carrier.
25 years ago, 1989: "Stardate 1989, this is Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise on temporary assignment to the space shuttle Discovery. Is everybody awake down there?" So went the wake up call to Houston from the crew of the shuttle Discovery.
10 years ago, 2004: In his final night of staged opera, 68-year-old tenor Luciano Pavarotti stood for 11 minutes as the patrons of the Metropolitan Opera gave him one last standing ovation.
