Fewer calls for Perkins Fire Dept. in 2013

Perkins firefighters likely wish they’d never hear an emergency call again requiring their services.
But this is a world in which people, including township residents, need fire and ambulance services daily.
So township firefighters can at least take some pride in knowing they received fewer fire calls this past year than in recent times.
Firefighters responded to 412 fire calls in 2013, about 100 less than in 2012. Not since 2010 has the number been this low, according to the department’s year-end report.
Additionally, damages caused by fires in 2013 totaled $146,000, the lowest amount since 2003. “Anytime we can decrease fire loss and fire calls is a great thing,” Perkins fire Chief Keith Wohlever said.
Wohlever attributes fewer fire calls and less damages to firefighters pursuing more aggressive fire-prevention activities with community members.
They routinely inspect homes and businesses, checking for potential hazards such as faulty or exposed wiring and remedy these dangers.
“We do everything possible to prevent fires,” Wohlever said. “Our goal is to prevent fires from happening”
Among the other interesting tidbits on Perkins fire in 2013:
•False alarms accounted for about 120 calls, or about 30 percent, of the 412 placed.
•Firefighters went on about 2,100 EMS runs, a slight decrease from 2012.
•Township officials collected $545,600 in EMS money, the lowest since 2008.
•The average response time to fire calls came in just under five minutes, which Wohlever considers pretty good.
Perkins firefighters should respond to every emergency within township limits in less than six minutes.
