50 years ago, 1964: Excellent menus for the Lenten season could be prepared with seafood products from Ruby's Fisheries retail market at Water and Meigs streets. The market offered fresh caught Lake Erie perch as well as seafoods like jumbo shrimp, oysters and herring.

25 years ago, 1989: Oliver North, the self-acknowledged "action officer" of the Iran-Contra scandal, began his trial on 12 felony charges arising from the worst scandal of the Reagan administration. Nine women and three men were chosen as jurors.

10 years ago, 2004: City manager Gerald Lechner announced his June retirement at the latest commission meeting, denying he was pressured into it. "My goal was to retire in 2004," Lechner told the commissioners.
