50 years ago, 1964: A two-mile stretch of Rts. 2 and 6 between Volunteer Bay and Vermilion was paved with cookies after a truck loaded with 32,000 pounds of treats, valued at $8,000, left the road and ripped out a tree.
25 years ago, 1989: The nominations for the 61st Academy Awards were announced with "Rain Man" at the top of the list. Top actors were Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman in "Mississippi Burning," Tom Hanks in "Big," James Olmos in :Stand and Deliver" and Max von Sydow in "Pelle the Conqueror."
10 years ago, 2004: As hundreds of gay and lesbian couples lined up at San Francisco's City Hall for the historic chance to wed with the city's blessing, opponents filed legal papers arguing that only judges could declare California's prohibition on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional.
