An artisanal baker’s dream can be found on Madison Street. Michelle Kodak, 40, opened up The Cakery’s Bakery in Port Clinton on June 15, offering freshbaked goods of all varieties — brownies, bagels, breads, cookies, cupcakes, you name it. “I have cooked and baked my entire life,” Kodak said. “I make a lot of cupcakes”
She also makes all manner of cakes — flat cakes, round rakes and custom cakes for parties and weddings — in 17 different flavors, and she can make just about any flavor of frosting a customer wants.
Her specialty cheese cakes, meanwhile, remain quite popular. “Everything is made and baked here as needed” she said. The shop’s doughnuts are the exception; they’re brought in from another business.
Kodak asks for at least a week of lead time on custom baking orders, and wedding cakes take even longer. She got her start in her home, where she would make cakes for her children. Family and friends soon took notice and began asking her to make cakes for them.
Eventually, a hobby became a business. She operated out of her home for years, but quickly enough, her talents demanded a bigger space. “We were growing out of our home,” she said. “It took over” About two years ago, Kodak and her husband started talking about moving the bakery into a storefront. “We decided we would, but without taking any loans out” Kodak said.
Over the course of a few years, she and her husband would purchase the equipment they needed and then place it in storage. It was mid-June, right in the middle of wedding and graduation season, when they decided to set up shop. “I wouldn’t have done it without the support of my husband and a couple of key clients who kept telling me, ‘It’s time to do it,’” Kodak said.
