There are two sessions of the competition – the first runs from January through June, while the second session is open from July until December – and area schools compete for $5,000 in prize money, based on the number of mall receipts turned in and collected. Mary Sartor, who is the marketing director at the Sandusky Mall, and Susan Majoy, a public relations representative from Ohio Business College, honored the winning schools and presented the principals and their guests with monetary prizes.

Perkins High School (represented by Principal Mark Dahlmann and Guidance Counselor Margie Warnicke) won first place and received $2,500, Furry School (represented by Principal Halley Leffler) was awarded $1,500 for second place, and third place winner Sandusky Central Catholic Junior High/High School (represented by Principal Mike Savona and students Hunter Sluss and Jordan Johnson) earned $1,000.

Perkins High School plans to use the School Spirit reward money to help fund their Aim for Excellence Program which includes a guest speaker; Furry Elementary will use their monetary gift for the classroom library; and Sandusky Central Catholic Junior High/High School will use their reward money for smart boards.

School Spirit is a friendly competition open to any K-12 schools whose communities are serviced by the Sandusky Mall, and schools earn one point for every dollar spent with retailers and restaurants within the mall complex. The next session of School Spirit is currently underway with $4,000 up for grabs, and will be running until June 30, 2014. Visit the customer service booth at the Sandusky Mall for more information and listen to 102.7 FM for weekly updates on point standings.

Ohio Business College, sponsor of the contest, will donate $8,000 in awards during 2014. For additional information about the college, go to the official school website at OhioBusinessCollege.edu, or call (419) 627-8345.
