Troopers await BAC results in fatal crash

Driver Charles Starks, 61, of Fremont, was headed east in a 2013 Kia Optima in the westbound lanes of the U.S. 6/U.S. 20 bypass north of Fremont when Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers started receiving calls from other drivers.

Before emergency crews arrived, his vehicle struck a 2007 Dodge Dakota head-on.

The collision killed Starks, as well as the driver of the Dodge — Evelyn Hunt, 57, of Fremont. The passenger in Hunt’s vehicle — her grandson, Zackary Zimmerman, 15, of Fremont — was also injured.

Troopers suspect alcohol was a factor, but they need lab tests to confirm their suspicions. “We’re waiting on those ourselves,” said Highway Patrol Sgt. Don Pratt, of the Fremont post.

A coroner drew a blood sample during the autopsy, which was sent to a lab in Columbus for processing.

It could be up to another two weeks before troopers receive the results.
