Vermilion seeks council president

Andy Ouriel • Jan 8, 2014 at 1:51 PM

Vermilion officials are searching for someone to fill the vacant position of council president. The term began this month and spans through Dec. 31, 2015.

Former councilman Steve Herron campaigned to become president, but area elections officials invalidated his petition. Herron apparently failed to obtain enough legitimate signatures.

New councilwoman Monica Stark offered to fill in as council’s leader until a permanent president is found.

“This is a very important position in the city, being head of the legislative branch,” Vermilion Mayor Eileen Bulan said. “You are in charge of all the council meetings and agendas and decide what council members will serve on different committees”

The president is mostly a figurehead position with no special voting powers or political privileges.

But the president, a member of council, can become acting mayor when the incumbent is not present or can’t fulfill her duties.

Want to apply?

Any Vermilion resident interested in becoming council president must send a resume through U.S. Postal Service certified mail.

All resumes must be received by Jan. 17.

Mail the resume to: ATTN: Gwen Fisher, clerk of council; 5511 Liberty Ave.; Vermilion, OH 44089

Interested parties submitting their resumes should make themselves available for an interview with city council at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Vermilion Municipal Complex on 687 Decatur St.
