The speed limit in the area is 55 mph, and the State Highway Patrol has said vehicle speed in wintry, whiteout conditions contributed to multiple crashes in the area Dec. 24. Eight people were hurt.

The Plain Dealer reported construction barrels are being added on certain sections to signal the edge of the road and help travelers navigate more safely, and radar signs that check and display the speed of passing drivers are being placed at various points.

Troopers also hope to deter speeding by increasing their presence in the area.
