Police investigating string of thefts

Norwalk police are seeking information about three men spotted breaking into a vehicle and possibly damaging two other vehicles last week.

On Dec. 5, a man caught three men in his truck and chased them off in the first block of Newton St. The suspects made off with his wallet, loose change and some keys, according to a police report.

The victim told officers he believed the men were trying to steal the vehicle, but the battery was dead and they were unable to start the truck. The next morning, the owner of a second vehicle told police her purse was stolen from her car and one of her windows was smashed out.

Police noticed a video surveillance camera nearby, and obtained footage that showed three people breaking into the woman’s vehicle in the 100 block of W. Main St., less than 10 minutes after the first victim called police.

They smashed in the front passenger side window of the vehicle, stole a purse and tossed it in the backyard of a Cortland Avenue home, where police later found it, Capt. Eric Hipp said.

Not until Sunday did officers learn of a third vehicle likely damaged by the same trio.

The owner of a truck said he discovered the steering column to his Chevy damaged the morning of Dec. 6 in the first block of N. Foster St.

The damage was extensive, and it was obvious someone had been trying to steal it, according to a police report.

The truck owner said he tried to fix the damage with help from a friend, but was unable. He filed a police report because the repairs would likely cost $1,000.

The first victim told police one of the men was white with facial hair and was wearing a brown Carhartt coat. In the surveillance footage, the suspects appear to be two men and possibly a woman.
