A judge set his bond at $1 million and set another hearing for Dec. 17, which will likely be rescheduled if he’s indicted on the felony charges. A Sandusky County grand jury is scheduled to meet this week, a court clerk said.

Gans is accused of causing a fiery, fatal crash on Thanksgiving evening on the Ohio Turnpike. His 2013 Infiniti M56 rammed into the back of a mini-van driven by Wilbur McCoy, 77, whose wife, Margaret, 77, was a passenger. The McCoys, of Toledo, both died at the scene.

The Infiniti hit speeds of up to 125 mph as it weaved through traffic in the westbound lane of the Ohio Turnpike, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said.

Other motorists reported the reckless vehicle at about 7 p.m., and troopers spotted it near Ohio 4 but were unable to catch up to it. Less than 20 minutes after receiving the first calls about the speeding vehicle, the Infiniti crashed into the rear of the McCoys’ Chrysler Town and Country mini-van, about three miles west of the Ohio 53 exit near Fremont.

The McCoys were trapped inside the van when it caught on fire.

Gans’ vehicle also burst into flames, but he managed to escape. He was flown to a Toledo hospital for treatment and a psychiatric evaluation, then taken to the Sandusky County jail.

It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Medical staff took a blood sample from Gans before he was transported to the jail.

Thirteen people, including the McCoys, died on Ohio roadways in 11 crashes from Wednesday to Sunday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Seven of those who died were not wearing safety belts, and three were killed in two drunken-driving crashes. The McCoys were wearing their seat belts.

A Marblehead man — Jeffery Sloan, 43 — died in a crash Friday afternoon in Danbury Township, where his SUV went off the road and slammed into a cluster of trees before bursting into flames.
