UPDATE 4:26 p.m. — Troopers have yet to positively identify the driver who died in the crash, but believe it was a man, a dispatcher said.

His family has been unable to identify him, and investigators will likely rely on dental records to confirm who the man was.

The vehicle was registered to a Wood County woman.

Original post 8:30 a.m. — A person trapped in a burning car was killed late Friday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The driver, whose remains have not been identified, was eastbound on State Route 163 just east of Englebeck Road when the 2010 Volkswagen Beetle drove off of the right side of the road and struck a boulder, overturned, then struck a utility pole, a tree, overturned again. The vehicle came to rest in a parking lot and became fully engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside inside, the Patrol said.

The driver's body was transported from the scene by the Ottawa County Coroner’s Office. The crash remains under investigation, the Patrol said, and it's unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor.
