50 years ago, 1963: Police firing bazookas flushed snipers from buildings in downtown Caracas, Venezuela, as officials strove to quell pro-Communist violence that left nearly 100 dead or wounded.
25 years ago, 1988: The oldest insect known to man was discovered by a team of scientists. The insect, an early ancestor to today's silverfish, was thought to have lived 390 million years ago. It was 15 million years older than any insect previously identified.
10 years ago, 2003: When the Huron Fire Department arrived at the Microtel Inn they didn't find a fire, but something potentially more dangerous. A 26-year-old man said he was cooking soup on a hot plate, but he was actually trying to create methamphetamine. This was the first meth cooking lab found in Erie County.
