50 years ago, 1963: Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller formally announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president and said he would enter the New Hampshire and other presidential primaries.

25 years ago, 1988: George Herbert Walker Bush, a New England patrician and Texas oilman who spend 25 years in federal service, was elected the 41st president of the United States and promised to achieve a "kinder, gentler nation."

10 years ago, 2003: Despite predictions that Erie County would only show a 30 percent turnout, the county voters blew away all predictions when nearly 45 percent turned out at the polls.
