A New York man led Sandusky police on a brief foot chase Thursday night near Pearl Street.

Damond Sanford, 24, of New Rochelle, was charged with marijuana possession, obstruction, no driver’s license and speeding.

A Sandusky police officer passed Sanford’s car near West Jefferson Street, but as the officer was turning around, he noticed the car trying to leave the area quickly — or at least much faster than the 25 mph limit, according to a police report.

The car zipped into a West Monroe Street driveway, with Sanford hopping from the driver’s seat and running west through yards, the report said. Officers caught up to him a short while later, near Pearl Street. At first, Sanford said his name was “William Newsom,” but at the police station he offered up his real name, the report said.

On the driver’s-side floorboard of his car, officers found a bag of marijuana, the report said. Sanford was taken to the Erie County jail and held on $7,600 bond.
