This year’s “Schools of Promise” in the local region:
• Edison Elementary School, Edison Schools, Erie County
• League Elementary School, Norwalk Schools, Huron County
• R.C. Waters Elementary School, Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools, Ottawa County
• Croghan Elementary School, Fremont Schools, Sandusky County
To earn the distinction, 40 percent of a school’s students must be economically disadvantaged, and 75 percent of its students must pass state math and reading tests, according to the Ohio Department of Education’s website. It must also receive an A or a B on designated areas of its state report card.
Edison Elementary School and League Elementary School have now received the award two years in a row.
“This is not only a school award, but also an award that the entire community is a part of,” said David Hermes, Edison Elementary School principal. “We have great students, teachers and parents that make this award possible.”
The Ohio Department of Education designated 141 “Schools of Promise” this year from more than 2,100 eligible schools.
