50 years ago, 1963: President Kennedy gave the green light for the private sale of millions of bushels of American wheat to the Soviet Union and other Communist bloc countries. The grain could only go to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, not Cuba.

25 years ago, 1988: Attorneys for a gay former soldier argued that the Army's 7-year-old policy of excluding homosexuals violated their constitutional rights.

10 years ago, 2003: Jerry Rose, Huntsburg Township, was the king of pumpkins in Ohio. His 1,390-pound gourd smashed the previous record set on Sept. 24, 2003, by a Wayne County farmer.
