Home burglar arrested after foot chase in Sandusky

The man who ran was found to have warrants out for his arrest, stemming from at least one home break-in earlier this year.

Kenneth Simmons, 18, 1400 block Third St., was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest. In August, Simmons failed to appear at a sentencing hearing for charges of complicity to burglary and receiving stolen property.

A Finch Street resident awoke at about 10 a.m. Monday, to find someone rummaging through his kitchen, Sandusky police Detective Dana Newell said.

“The homeowner spooked him off, then called police,” Newell said.

As police arrived moments later, they spotted Simmons at the corner of East Osborne Street and Columbus Avenue, Newell said.

Simmons took off running through nearby backyards when he saw the cruiser, but police cornered him in Jaycee Park a short while later, Newell said.

A few hours later, a Wayne Street resident went home for her lunch break and found her back door kicked in. Officers believe that incident is related to the earlier ones, Newell said.

“We have nothing to link him to the burglaries right now. (His previous charges) are similar to the incidents we were dealing with today,” Newell said. Police confirmed Simmons is a suspect in Monday’s home burglaries.

In July, Simmons pleaded guilty to complicity to commit burglary and receiving stolen property. His bond was revoked in August, however, when he did not go to his sentencing hearing, according to court documents. Simmons was taken to the Erie County jail and held on $3,000 bond.
