McClester to fill seat at Edison Schools

Mark Miller, Edison board member for 36 years, announced his resignation in August. His fellow board members officially accepted it Sept. 18. Shortly after, North Point Educational Service Center board members appointed him to their empty seat.

Miller’s term at Edison Schools ended in January, and he was not seeking re-election this November.

“He felt it was time to move on and when the opportunity came to join North Point’s board, he decided to resign a bit earlier,” superintendent Tom Roth said. “I’m sad to see him go but happy he can move on to something new. He is a pillar in this community and a great man to work with.”

School board members cannot serve on two boards simultaneously.

Miller replaces Ober Tanigawa, who recently resigned from the North Point Educational Service Center board. The center serves schools in Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties. Two members represent each member county. Miller will represent Erie County.

When contacted this week, Miller reflected on his years of district service — both the difficult times, such as campaigning for this year’s tax levy, and fond memories, such as reading books to children at the district’s elementary school, where his wife was principal for many years. “It has been my privilege to serve the kids and families of this wonderful community,” said Miller, an Edison High School graduate.

At their September meeting, Edison board members appointed Matt McClester to fill Miller’s vacant seat. McClester was a board candidate on the November ballot, running unopposed for one of three available seats.

His appointment leaves James Suhanic, a current board member, the only candidate on the ballot. The other two seats will be filled by write-in candidates.

“(McClester) has been a regular at board meetings and always has great questions,” Roth said. “He’s very concerned about our district and its students. We decided to get him in as early as possible so he can get started.”
