Tyler Smith, 19, of Bellevue, appeared briefly in Huron County Common Pleas Court to enter the plea.
Huron County prosecutor Russ Leffler said he’ll recommend Smith receive the maximum sentence, 11 years in prison.
Smith and Connor Holbrook, 19, also of Bellevue, were accused of going to a home near Willard on April 22 and assaulting St. Paris teen Austin Thornton, 19.
Smith was the main perpetrator in the assault, Huron County detectives said. Thornton survived the attack after his girlfriend drove him to Willard Hospital and he was flown by medical helicopter to a Toledo hospital, where he remained in critical condition for weeks.
The night of the assault, detectives tracked down Smith and Holbrook at a Bellevue apartment belonging to Brianna Boonie, 19, who has since been indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and obstructing justice.
Boonie’s case is scheduled for trial in December. Holbrook is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and other charges. He is scheduled for trial in November.
