Stanley Johnson, 58, was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center for treatment. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Lorenzo Gray, 52, a Detroit-area native, was arrested later Friday evening at the Crossroads homeless shelter on Superior Street, where he’d been staying, police said. He was charged with felonious assault.
Johnson was talking to a friend on the sidewalk outside his home when at about 7 p.m. the suspect approached him from behind and plunged a knife into his lower back, a witness said.
One of Johnson’s friends saw the altercation and intervened, the witness said. The bystander squeezed the suspect’s wrist, causing the attacker to drop the weapon. The intervener also pulled the suspect off Johnson, the witness said, prompting the attacker to threaten to kill Johnson and his friend.
“He said, ‘I’ll kill you too,’” the witness said.
The suspect ran southwest down Parish Street, toward Milan Road. A red or burgundy truck stopped in the road about a block away and picked him up, the witness said.
“He must’ve called someone to come get him,” the witness said.
Police obtained a description of the suspect, later identified as Gray, and arrested him at the homeless shelter without incident.
Before paramedics arrived, Johnson told a relative he recognized Gray, who had been living at the homeless shelter.
Police said witnesses indicated the incident may have stemmed from an argument over a woman.
