50 years ago, 1963: Commercial fishing was dwindling on Lake Erie. A total of 447 trap net permits had been issued for the fall season. In 1962 the number of permits issued was 531, a drop of 84 permits.
25 years ago, 1988: Reformers hailed a federal legal officer's recommendation that marijuana be classified as a less dangerous drug and made legally available for medical use, but the idea got a cool reception elsewhere.
10 years ago, 2003: Erie County held its annual public auction, and surplus sales earned the financially strapped county $44,280. The biggest money makers were dump trucks the County Engineer's Office no longer needed and cars from the Sheriff's Office.
