In the early hours of Aug. 25, a fight erupted in the second-floor hallway of an apartment building on Sandusky’s east side. About 20 to 30 boys and men clashed in what police believe was a turf war between Sandusky and Detroit gang members.

Three days after the brawl, Sandusky police teamed up with numerous other local agencies to arrest 13 of the men and boys, while issuing arrest warrants for six others.

One man and two boys have since been picked up on the warrants, leaving three more on the loose, Sandusky police Sgt. Dana Newell said.

Dameyion Smith, 19, of the 2000 block of Second St., was arrested Monday at the Sandusky police station. “Patrol officers were frequently stopping by his house,” Newell said. “He just decided to turn himself in.”

A 13-year-old Clinton Street boy was arrested late Wednesday, while a 16-year-old Perry Street boy turned himself in the day after the bust, Newell said.

Three juveniles have yet to be apprehended: a 17-year-old from the 900 block of Hayes Ave.; a 17-year-old from the 1800 block of Third St.; and a 16-year-old from the 500 block of Perry St., Newell said.

Thus far, all those charged were on the “Sandusky side” of the fight. Officers are still working to identify and apprehend the suspects from Detroit.

“We’re meeting with some people (Thursday) to confirm their identities, but we think we know who four or five of them are,” Newell said.

Newell said he hopes to have the names confirmed by later this week or early next week. “And then, we’ll go out looking for them, too,” he said. “We have to let the community know that when things like this happen, we’re going to respond to them. It’s not an acceptable act, and we can’t have it here.”

Surveillance footage from the apartment’s hallway showed broken bottles being hurled between groups, as well as men armed with knives, frying pans and sticks, and one man firing a BB gun into the opposing crowd. The brawl raged on for 20 minutes before bystanders called police.

“The possibility of innocent people getting injured during something like this, we’re not going to tolerate it,” Newell said.

All those arrested were charged with participating in criminal gang activity, aggravated rioting, burglary and complicity to vandalism. Each boy was additionally cited with a curfew violation. The men arrested remain in the Erie County jail on $40,000 bond apiece.
