50 years ago, 1963: A local Amphibious Force sailor, Harry Hoover, received the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for rescuing a drowning man from the shark infested waters in Costa Rica.
25 years ago, 1988: An armed robber at PicWay Shoe Mart, Perkins Avenue, approached two employees outside the store, waved a gun and demanded they drop their bags. Both employees did, but the robber picked up a day-old lunch bag rather than the bag with money.
10 years ago, 2003: The federal government was in store for at least eight more years of budget deficits, including a record $480 billion shortfall in 2004, congressional budget analysts said. The deficits would increase if White House tax cuts and Congressional spending persist.
