50 years ago, 1963: U.S. scientists planned to continue testing on taming hurricanes. Experiments conducted on Hurricane Esther suggested seeding clouds with silver iodide crystals could soften the destructive winds of a hurricane. More tests were planned.
25 years ago, 1988: William "The Refrigerator" Perry was told to loose 50 pounds by coach Mike Ditka before being allowed to participate in training camp. The massive linemen reported to mini-camp weighing 375 pounds.
10 years ago, 2003: The cost of keeping the troubled Davis-Besse nuclear plant shut down and repaired was to be $450 million, and would continue to increase. The plant was shut down in February 2002 for maintenance when a leak was discovered in the cap covering the plant's reactor vessel.
