Don't Forget the ZIP

50 years ago, 1963: Starting July 1, 1963, all mail leaving Sandusky needed to include a ZIP code number as part of the sender's return address, according to Arthur Larimer, postmaster. The ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) code program became effective nationwide on that date in an attempt to speed up mail delivery.
25 years ago, 1988: S.E. Johnson Inc. construction crews installed the 1.6 million tons of steel girders on the Ohio 2 bypass bridge over the Huron River. The Ohio Department of Transportation said the deck for one side of the 2,600-foot span would be poured that fall.
10 years ago, 2003: Sandusky's Tess Drake survived the comic cut in "Last Comic Standing." She was one of 10 comics selected to live in the Los Angeles mansion from more than 20 comedians who competed in the final round.
