50 years ago, 1963: A statuesque blonde from Willard was crowned the area's second Miss Vacationland before an estimated crowd of 1,500 in the Cedar Point Ballroom. The judges picked Ellawayne-Sue Wrede, 18, after she performed a sketch from the movie "Three Faces of Eve."
25 years ago, 1988: Dry weather and high winds spread a fire which destroyed nearly 85 acres of grass, oats and pasture in Margaretta Township before firefighters brought it under control. No one was injured as firefighters battled the blaze for over two hours in temperature that topped 100 degrees.
10 years ago, 2003: Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich picked up his first congressional endorsement from fellow liberal activist Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif. The two were active in the Congressional Progressive Caucus and criticized the war with Iraq.
