One of this week's notes, from Vermilion High School:

Savannah Kuntz, a recent Vermilion High School graduate, received an appointment to the highly selective U.S. Coast Guard Academy in May.

The academy provides education to future U.S. Coast Guard officers and is based in New London, Conn. About 300 cadets enter the academy each summer, with about 200 graduating from the four-year program with a bachelor's degree of science in one of eight majors.

While a Vermilion Schools student, Kuntz was captain of the varsity soccer team and Vermilion Boat Club sailing team, as well as a member of the varsity track team. Kuntz was also president of National Honor Society and student council.

She plans to continue her soccer and sailing activities at the academy.
