The Sandusky State Theatre has found a new star to assume a recently vacated role.

David Taylor, of Dallas, starts his new job as executive director next week.

While he’s been in Sandusky less than a week, he said the theater feels like home.

“I’m already comfortable with being here,” he said. “It seems like there’s a nice, supportive environment in the area.”

Taylor has 20 years of experience in the industry and was general manager of the Majestic Theatre in Dallas. He has worked with diverse communities, comedians and Broadway performers, which may the reason the State Theatre’s leaders chose him over 116 other applicants.

“Dave has an exceptional background in booking performances and developing a community following,” State Theatre board president Steve Dice said.

Taylor will replace former executive director Thomas Kazmierczak, who left for a job in Syracuse, N.Y., following his five-year stint in Sandusky. Much like Kazmierczak, Taylor hopes his love of theatre and his keen booking skills will help him fill the seats at this downtown icon.

“I really enjoy the community experience,” he said. “I want to make sure we bring in great activities for the community. And I think I have a well-rounded bag of tricks to do that.”

Taylor said he believes old theaters like Sandusky’s serve as “anchors” for the community. The State Theatre opened in 1928.

“I love working with something that has a history,” Taylor said.

Among his many responsibilities, he’ll also oversee the day-to-day operations and assist with producing shows.

“Dave will be our partner with the community,” Dice said.

He’ll earn about $75,000 a year, not including possible bonuses based on profitability and tickets sold. His experience, coupled with his love for community involvement, has gained him the respect and support of the theater, Dice said.

“It’s nice to be in such a supportive environment,” Taylor said. “Knowing I have this kind of support can only make my job easier.”
