Suspect moved to hospital

A Sandusky teen accused of fatally stabbing his infant cousin is now in a state-run psychiatric hospital.

Denzel Castile, 19, was transferred to Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo Wednesday afternoon, after staff at Firelands Regional Medical Center evaluated him and issued an order for the transfer, Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said.

“We placed a hold on him for our agency, and we will pick him up if he is released,” Sigsworth said.

Castile will remain in the state psychiatric facility indefinitely.

He is accused of stabbing to death his 11-week-old cousin, Athena Castile, on May 16 inside a relative’s Dewey Street home. After a brief tussle with relatives at the home and then with police, Castile was quickly arrested.

He has been under medical treatment since then, and he has also been counseled by clergy. When he appeared by video arraignment in Sandusky Municipal Court Monday, he seemed subdued and said only one sentence during the brief hearing.

Family members have said Castile hadn’t been himself for the past several months, since he went to the University of Toledo as a freshman after graduating from Sandusky High School in 2012.

His family even took him to hospital for an evaluation at one point, they told police, but doctors told the family they found nothing wrong with him.

Castile is charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault and assault on a peace officer. His bond is set at more than $1 million.

Athena Castile was the daughter of Jenisa Castile, 19, of Norwalk.

Athena’s family has scheduled two candlelight vigils today — one in Sandusky and one in Norwalk.

Vigils for Athena this evening

* 7 to 9 p.m. at Pohl Park on Main Street in Norwalk

* 8 p.m.  at Washington Park Gazebo in Sandusky
