50 years ago, 1963: James Sargeant of rural Bellevue won an appointment from the 13th Congressional District to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Col., Rep. Charles A. Mosher announced. He was also named to the one vacancy available from the district to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
25 years ago, 1988: A three-judge panel sentenced retired U.S. autoworker John Demjanjuk to death by hanging for carrying out sadistic war crimes at a Nazi death camp in Poland during World War II.
10 years ago, 2003: A safe with $5,241 in Huron Athletic Booster Club money was found empty in a Perrysville park in Ashland County. The safe, weighing 70-100 pounds, was taken from a Huron Booster Club member's residence.
