50 years ago, 1963: The atomic submarine Thresher was lost at sea, with no chance of survivors, said Secretary of the Navy, Fred Korth. All 129 men were presumed dead, trapped more than 8,000 feet under the Atlantic.
25 years ago, 1988: In hopes of injecting some "new blood" into the organization, the Erie County Republican Party was starting a Young Republicans Chapter. More than 22 people aged 14 to 36 expressed interest in becoming members.
10 years ago, 2003: Whirlpool Corp. in Benton Harbor, Mich., agreed to pay Ohio Environmental Protection Agency $38,000 in penalties for violations at three Ohio manufacturing facilities, including the plant in Clyde.
