Fremont man shoots at ex-lover

Lucas Lykins, 28, was also charged with having weapons under disability, domestic violence and endangering children. He remains in the Sandusky County jail on $500,000 bond.

The gunfire struck no one, although one of three shots passed through the slats of a crib in which Lykins’ 11-month-old son was sleeping, Fremont police Chief Tim Wiersma said.

The shooting happened just before 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Lykins later told police he went to the home in the 700 block of Alger St. to retrieve some belongings, and he used his key to get inside because he didn’t see the woman’s vehicle parked outside.

The child and the mother, Ashley Valle, 25, were inside sleeping. Valle got up when she heard someone enter the home.

“They see him with the gun, she runs back into the bedroom and he fires,” Wiersma said.

Lykins was apparently upset because there was a man in the house. Valle told police that Lykins hadn’t lived there for a while.

Lykins fired a total of three shots, then fought with Valle and her boyfriend, with the tussle taking them outside. Lykins then fell from the front of the house — a 5- to 6-foot drop into the yard — before running to his car and driving off, police said.

The victims called 911 and provided a description of the car. Fremont police Capt. Tim Woolf soon stopped the vehicle at a Speedway convenience store on West State Street and quickly arrested Lykins.

Officers later found the handgun beneath a car parked outside the Alger Street home.

All three bullets had passed through the walls of the home. Police found one bullet lodged in a wood pile outside the home, Wiersma said.

“Walls, as they are, let things pass through them,” he said. “I’m so happy that no one was shot.”

Lykins appeared in Fremont Municipal Court Monday for an arraignment.
