Two capital murder trials are pending in Erie County: Michael Milner, for allegedly beating to death 3-year-old Owen Barker in July at a Fulton Street home, and Curtis Clinton, accused of strangling Heather Jackson and her two children — Celina, 3 and Wayne, 20 months — to death on John Street in September.
The average cost of the initial trial phase in the state is about $300,000. Normal courtroom appeals and automatic appeals related to death penalty cases can skyrocket the expense beyond $1 million, according to the Ohio Public Defender's office.
