Blizzard warning cancelled; winter weather advisory in effect

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE update (posted 6:15 p.m.)

A blizzard warning has been lifted, but Northern Ohio counties along the lake coast are still grappling with blowing snow on roads as the weather heads east. The conditions will make for dangerous travel and some roads may be impassable from drifting snow. Visibility could be limited at times

Temperatures should remain in the upper 20s.

Motorists are advised to have a winter survival kit with them at all times. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle, moving to shelter only if it's within eye sight.


• All practices for Dec. 26 at Sandusky High School and Middle School are cancelled.

• Danbury Township trustees have cancelled tonight's meeting. It is rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.

• The Sandusky Library will close at 3 p.m. today.

• A number of area businesses have closed early, including Mr. Smith's Coffee House and Cameo Pizza (Sandusky and Huron locations).

UPDATED 5:45 p.m. — According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, Ottawa County is also now under a Level 2 snow emergency, given snow drifts and icy roads. 

UPDATED 3:50 p.m. — While residents are buckling in for a long night, a number of area businesses are closing early. Mr. Smith's Coffe House closed at 2 p.m., and Cameo Pizza in Huron and Sandusky is closed tonight.

UPDATED 3:06 p.m. — Sandusky County is now under a Level 2 snow emergency. Roads are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow, and roads may be icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the road.

UPDATED 1:41 p.m. — Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer has issued a Level 1 snow emergency, which means roads are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are also icy. Drivers are encouraged to be cautious.

UPDATED 12:30 p.m. — Huron County Sheriff Dane Howard has changed the snow emergency to Level 2.

UPDATED 12:02 p.m. — Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth has issued a Level 1 snow emergency.

11:30 a.m. — Huron County Sheriff Dane Howard has issued a Level 1 snow emergency.
