Trooper Carl L. Gutman, 42, of the Sandusky Post, was on duty driving a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria Patrol car west on Salem Carroll Road in Carroll Township, Ottawa County, at 7:41 p.m.

At the same time Mark A. Swift, 63, of Oak Harbor, headed south on Toussaint South Road in a 2004 Dodge Caravan, stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with Salem Carroll Road. According to troopers, Swift then failed to yield to the oncoming police cruiser and pulled out in front of Gutman.

The cruiser struck the left front side of the caravan, sending both vehicles off the north side of the road into a ditch.

Gutman suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken to Magruder Hospital where he was treated and released.

Swift also suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken to Mercy St. Charles Hospital in Oregon, Ohio.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
